What are some other paths in the food industry?

Roto asked:

I’m 21 and I’m a cook. I graduated from a culinary school. Right now, i work in a restauarant to gain some exp. I would like to continue to keep educated myself becuz learning nevers end. But I wanna ask what other educations can i get to help in my cooking field other than pastry and sugar decoration course. I really enjoy creating new dishes with different kind of flavors and textures by using my own theory. I believe cooking will bring happiness to ppl. I was thinking taking chinese herb medicine. (What other suggestion do u have?) I never intend to open a restuarant and become a executive chef. I look at cooking as more in scientific and formulas.

BTW, i’m also a language lover. I speak English, Chinese, French, Spanish, and a bit of Russian. I think the language can give me that extra boost in my cooking area.

No short answer plz.
thoughtful answer is welcome. Thank you for the advices ^^’

thegoodthebad&theleftoverlauren asked:

My boyfriend is graduating from the French Culinary School in Manhattan this Monday then we’re going out to a fancy restaurant for dinner. Like wicked fancy. Like, owned by one of those chefs on the food network. I asked my boyfriend what to wear and he told me to wear what I usually wear only somehow I think doc martins and a bullet belt won’t really cut it. Help!? oh yea, a picture of the outfit you’re describing would really help, I’m fashion challenged.

Is culinary school a bad idea?

claire asked:

I am currently a senior in college getting my bachelors in psychology. I am debating going to law school or culinary school. I have a passion for both. What are the job opportunities like for someone who gets a degree in the culinary arts? I want to open my own restaurant but i’m just scared i’ll end up working as a burger flipper at mcdonald’s instead. Should I just be more practical and go to law school where a good job is more attainable?
I always see these fancy french chefs on tv and that terrifies me because i feel like I couldn’t hold a candle to them.

French help please?

st. sparrow asked:

*NO online translation sites please!*

Bonjour à tous,

Is it true that the word <> means grass, as well as herb? is there a way that you differentiate the <> that grows on your lawn, from culinary herbs?

also - isn’t <> also used as a slang for marijuana?

Merci!
David, thanks for your insight on that.

Curious_lalalala, thanks very much for the French-Canadian perspective, especially since I live in Quebec and it’s often difficult to keep track of the colloquial differences!

Funny, I looked up “lawn” and I got “pelouse”, which none of you mentioned. I wonder how common it is.
Maya, that’s funny about “herbe” being an out-of-date expression for marijuana. Just like in English, it was more common to say “herb” or “grass” for marijuana back in the 60s/70s.

Freshface, I’ve never heard the word “grape” in French before to mean raisin!? I’m pretty sure it’s more common to say “raisin sec” or simply “raisin” if the context is obvious.

EXTREME DEBT HELP PLEASE?

junk_account23 asked:

my wife got a loan for 40,000 for the french culinary institute. she’s been in school for about 2 months and not until i started checking her paper for this, did i find that the interests for this are 61,000. so now we have a debt of 101,000. this is to be paid in 15 years or so by making payments of 600 a month. I also made her get a credit report and she has other debts (about 10,000 total) but what worries me the most is the 101,000 student loan. what can i do about this? I’ve heard of student loan consolidation, would that help? do you have any advice? we’re not professionals or anything, we actually live with her mom and don’t have money to even pay rent, what can we do?
it is 61,000 and the interests is 13%. she doesnt have to start the payments until november of next next year. we called them today and they confirmed this, the loan is through sallie mae.
her mom is her cosigner. as a matter of fact at the beggining she said she would pay for it, but she thought it was only 40,000. then she started backing up and now we just found out that it’s actually 100,000.

To all the proffesional chefs out there! Can you share your story and tell us what challenged you most?

EndorphinRush asked:

In other words, I am interested in learning what you have been through to make it to the end, whether if it is the formal education such as going through culinary school, or if it is any other route. I inspire to become a professional cook one day but do not have any type of support (as in financially and emotionally), yet I have been always told that I have skills for containing a broad range of knowledge on Mediterranean, Asian, American, Mexican, and French (a good repertoire of recipes on memory). Yet, I have my own international urban unique style which evolved over the years. I am familiar with different types of cooking i.e. braising, reducing, broiling, seering (if I spelled it right) and etc. To sum-up I’m quick and practical as well, all I need is is some push in the right direction…
