Is culinary school a bad idea?
claire asked:
I am currently a senior in college getting my bachelors in psychology. I am debating going to law school or culinary school. I have a passion for both. What are the job opportunities like for someone who gets a degree in the culinary arts? I want to open my own restaurant but i’m just scared i’ll end up working as a burger flipper at mcdonald’s instead. Should I just be more practical and go to law school where a good job is more attainable?
I always see these fancy french chefs on tv and that terrifies me because i feel like I couldn’t hold a candle to them.

You probably couldn’t hold a candle to the French chefs… but because you haven’t been to culinary school.
That choice vs. law school, you have to decide.Law school may provide greater opportunity for income. many lawyers however hate their careers.
Heck no! Culinary school is wonderful if its in your heart. Having fear to face the obstacles is typical but you have to want it sooooooo bad that its eating away at you. A good idea is to check several schools in your surrounding area and talk with an advisor. Look into financial aid (scholarships, grants, loans, etc)because the schools are expensive. Going for an associates will get you somewhere rather than just a certificate. My advice: go with what’s natural to you and what you’re persistent about. Don’t be intimidated by what is on TV; how in the world would you want to compare yourself to those chefs right now? But by the time you have your schooling and your experience, then you can size yourself up to them and possibly be invited to do your own show, too.
Follow your passion even if that means working McDonalds. When you do what you love, it’s not work.
You need to do what you absolutely love. You cannot live your life by what is going to make you the most money, unless it’s what you love, because you’ll live in regret! If you are a lawyer you may make a lot of money, but you’ll also be working long hours. Do what you feel in your heart!
My question to you is which would you have more fun doing? There is nothing more amazing than doing something you love doing for a profession. Both jobs will be stressful no doubt, so you have to ask yourself which stress you would enjoy more.. handling divorces, defending felons, or cooking your favorite foods and being creative. Don’t worry about being Top Chef, you will be in own kitchen no matter who you work for. Don’t worry about failure. We all fail , that is how we learn. Just go for it..either or. Good luck
